Call for Board of Directors 2026 - About Rowan House Society

‍For over 25 years, Rowan House Society has provided crisis intervention, long-term support, and preventative education to anyone impacted by violence and abuse in Southern Alberta. Domestic violence and abuse is a serious public safety and community issues that affect far more people than we often realize. In Canada, rates of police-reported intimate partner violence are 75% higher for rural women than for those in urban areas, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to promote safe, respectful, and non-violent relationships.

The Opportunity

Rowan House Society is seeking a dedicated individual to join our Board of Directors. The Rowan House Society board is a governance board which means that the board of directors is responsible for establishing the organizational direction, oversight and controls with appropriate resources needed to fulfill its mission. This is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to a cause that affects many people in our community while leveraging your expertise to guide strategic decisions, advocate for those we serve, and drive forward initiatives that transform lives.

Key Responsibilities

·        Provide governance and oversight, ensuring Rowan House Society's resources are managed effectively, and its mission is pursued with integrity and passion.

·        Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic plan that aligns with our core values and mission.

·        Understand, support and champion the mission, vision, and values of Rowan House Society.

·        Collaborate with fellow board members, the Executive Director, and community stakeholders to foster innovative solutions to the challenges faced by those affected by domestic violence and abuse.

·        Come prepared to all board and committee meetings having read all materials and is prepared to engage in                          discussion

·        Come prepared and contribute while attending, “in person” and “virtual” board and committee meetings as well as the Annual General Meeting.

·        Attend volunteer events as executive sponsor.

Ideal Candidate Profile

·        Fundamental belief in our mission’s purpose and impassioned to make the community we serve a better place to live.

·        Experience in any of the following: corporate governance, fundraising & philanthropy, government relations, marketing & public relations, non-profit, sector-specific knowledge, legal and/or risk mitigation, strategic leadership.

·        A leader who values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

·        Capacity to attend all meetings, events and provide input to special ad hoc committees to advance the strategic goals of the organization

·        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders and foster partnerships.

·        Committed to the principles of trauma-informed care and the Rowan House Society's mission, vision, and values.

·        Reside within the community we serve and/or indigenous affairs experience. ‍
