· Type: Part Time, Average of 18hrs Week

Who We Are:
Rowan House Society provides crisis intervention and preventative education to support individuals affected by domestic violence and abuse. We serve a large geographic area in Southern Alberta, including Foothills County, Vulcan County, and MD of Willow Creek.
As of September 2025, Rowan House Society is now a Pet-Friendly Shelter meaning that women and children experiencing Domestic Violence and Abuse will now be able to bring their family pet with them into shelter.
Your Opportunity:
We are looking for a Shelter Support Worker who can work an alternating weekend shift. The first rotation would be Friday & Saturday & 8:00am – 8:00pm and the second rotation (the following weekend) would be a Sunday Awake Overnight shift from 8:00pm to 8:00am. Night shifts are a mandatory component of this position.
The Emergency Shelter program has two distinct components that can support clients and the community:
· Support Line
· Emergency Shelter
The Support Line offers crisis and emotional support, information, and referrals to community resources to individuals who are or have experienced domestic violence and abuse. The Support Line is available 24 hours per day, 365 days a year, which can be offered in multiple languages. When the Support Line Worker is not scheduled, this position will be supported by the Shelter Support Workers.
The Emergency Shelter is a client centered program delivering short term crisis orientated case management for clients experiencing domestic violence and abuse.
As a Part Time Weekend Shelter Support Worker you could expect a regular day to include some of the below duties:
· Conduct client intake, risk assessment, and trauma-informed safety planning.
· Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, advocacy, and individualized case management.
· Facilitate domestic violence education and support groups.
· Respond to crisis and support line calls with safety planning and resource navigation.
· Maintain client safety by following shelter protocols and strengthening support systems.
· Collaborate with internal teams to ensure coordinated, client-centered services.
· Complete accurate, confidential documentation and incident reporting.
· Support daily shelter operations, including on-call response and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment.

Your Required Qualifications:
· Strong communication skills
· Strong crisis intervention, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
· Ability to analyze risk and provide strong risk mitigation procedures.
· 2+ Years Experience in a client serving social services related field with preference given to Children’s Services, Victim Services, and services serving those with housing scarcity, addiction and mental health issues.
· Operates with discretion, tact and confidentiality while remaining curious and non-judgmental.
Some Asset Qualifications that are desirable:
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of Programs and ability to adapt to new technology and programs as required
· Bachelor of Social Work or other related field with at least two years related experience in community-based services.
· Awareness of the unique cultural and spiritual needs of indigenous individuals, families, and communities. A strong understanding of the realities and issues that impact the Indigenous communities.
· Awareness and understanding of Domestic Violence and Abuse and the impacts it has on children, families and the community.
Before beginning your employment with Rowan House, you will REQUIRED to have:
· A satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
· A satisfactory Child Intervention Check or proof of submission to IIRC.
· Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification
· Registration with an associated professional body (if applicable).
· Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a clear Driver's Abstract and reliable transportation.
Working Conditions in this Role:
· This role is for weekend employment and thus weekend availability is essential.
· Awake Overnight shifts (12hrs) are a critical component of this position.
· Occasional lifting of items (up to 20 lbs) may be required.
· You may also be required to lift or carry children weighing up to 60 pounds.
· The role may involve periods of sitting at a desk
· Extended periods of computer work may be required.
· Direct or Indirect contact with animals or animal dander (Cat and Dog)

For over 25 years, Rowan House Society has provided crisis intervention, long-term support, and preventative education to anyone impacted by violence and abuse in Southern Alberta. Domestic violence and abuse is a serious public safety and community issues that affect far more people than we often realize. In Canada, rates of police-reported intimate partner violence are 75% higher for rural women than for those in urban areas, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to promote safe, respectful, and non-violent relationships.

Your Opportunity:
The Legal Resource Navigation Program will provide education, knowledge and understanding of the court processes, legal information, and navigation of the court system which will assist individuals who are experiencing domestic violence and abuse. The Legal Resource Navigator will assist the individuals with safety planning, accompaniment to court, information and referrals, and emotional support. After court, the Legal Resource Navigator, will debrief with client the court outcomes, discuss options and the next steps.
As a Legal Resource Navigator you could expect a regular day to include some of the below duties:
Review Legal Resource Navigation Referrals and provide individuals with court information and
possible options. Discuss the risks and benefits with the individuals who are accessing the court system.
Complete intake, consent forms, critical incident reports, and discharge information for the Legal Resource Navigation Program.
Provide referrals for interpretation and translation.
Provide information on available court resources that may support in the decision-making process. Provide information to clients on specific orders to further the client’s knowledge and understanding of the order, provide support and assistance in completing an order and the process to file an order.
Prepare individuals for court by providing information on the court process and how to navigate the court system.
Connect individuals to court personal for further support and assistance.
Discuss safety planning before, during and after court proceedings.
Accompany clients to court and debrief outcomes and next steps as required.
Create and implement court information groups as needed.
Establishes and maintains a client caseload through regular touch bases and scheduled meetings.
Distribute the client feedback survey for completion.
Complete case notes and the required funding data for the Alberta Law Foundation.
In collaboration with the Data Analysis, quarterly review of the Legal Resource Navigation Program data. The Legal Resource Navigator may make the required revisions as needed.
Develop community partnerships through presentations and committee work.
Mentor volunteers and practicum students who are supporting in the Legal Resource Navigation Program.
Work in collaboration with various programs within the organization to offer wrap around support.
Other duties as assigned by the Program Lead.
Community Relations:
In collaboration with Program Lead, connect with community agencies and resources to advocate for services for individuals of domestic violence and abuse.
Attend appropriate community agency meetings as required by Program Lead and bring forward new opportunities for partnering with other organizations or committee meetings.
Professional Development:
Remain current in the research and best practices in topics related to domestic violence and abuse, crisis intervention models, and information on Rowan House Society strategic outcomes
Attend and participate in training opportunities to enhance learning opportunities and areas of growth.

Your Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology and Justice Studies or Relevant Human Services Field with at least two years’ experience in crisis intervention and community work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Experience with the Alberta Family Courts
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs.
Knowledge and understanding of the effects of domestic violence and abuse.
Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and the values of Rowan House Society.
Knowledge of community resources, specifically in the Foothills area.
Strong knowledge and understanding of the specific support required for rural communities.
Strong presentation and group facilitation skills.
Commitment to understanding cultural humility, diversity and supporting equality of opportunities.
Awareness of the unique cultural and spiritual needs of indigenous individuals, families, and communities. A strong understanding of the realities and issues that impact the Indigenous communities.
