5th Annual Breakfast with the Guys

Tickets are now on sale for our
5th annual Breakfast with the Guys!

This year we have a very special speaker, sharing his wisdom on domestic violence and abuse prevention through three different events:

Session 1: 5th Annual Breakfast with the Guys

Wednesday, November 2, 2022,  7-9 am |  Foothills Centennial Centre, Okotoks | Cost: $110

Tickets include a hot buffet breakfast of scrambled eggs, home-fried potatoes,
sausage, bacon, western flapjacks, fruit, coffee, and tea.

Topic: Domestic Violence and Abuse Are Not Just Women’s Issues

This presentation is about engaging the community in a broader conversation about gender-based violence and abuse. Keynote speaker Dr. Jackson Katz reframes violence against women as a men's issue and shows how beliefs about “manhood” often underlie much abusive and violent behaviour.

Who Should Attend? It may be called Breakfast with the “Guys”; however, this presentation is open to anyone in the community who wants to expand their knowledge on gender-based violence and abuse.

We encourage anyone and everyone from the public to attend, including but not limited to community members, business leaders, administrators of human service agencies, government officials, and others in positions of influence.

Session 2: Afternoon Workshop (New!)

Wednesday, November 2, 2022,  1-3 pm |  Foothills Centennial Centre, Okotoks | Cost: $60

Tickets to this session include coffee, tea, and light snacks.

Topic: Beyond Shelter – Addressing Domestic Violence And Abuse Across Multiple Sectors

In this session, Dr. Katz expands on gender-based violence, emphasizing practical concepts and tools that can be used personally and professionally. This includes how to recognize and support individuals experiencing violence and abuse.

Who Should Attend?

Professionals in sports, media, education, business, health care, and law enforcement who are interested in increasing their knowledge and understanding of domestic violence and abuse.

Session 3: Sector Talk (New!)

Tickets to this session include coffee, tea, and light snacks.

Topic: An informal, honest dialogue with Dr. Jackson Katz

This session will allow professionals in the domestic violence and abuse sector to discuss their challenges in engaging male adults and youth.

Who Should Attend? Individuals working in the domestic violence and abuse sector and other human services professionals who would like to hear from one of the world's leading prevention educators and theorists. This includes, but is not limited to:

2021 Breakfast with the Guys ~ Virtual Event

2021 Breakfast with the Guys Event Banner

You’re invited to join us for our 4th Annual Breakfast with the Guys - where we bring awareness to the small ways you can actually make a big difference for all the women and girls in your life.

Friday, November 5
7am-9am
Virtual Interactive Zoom Presentation

Our 2021 Keynote Speaker is Michael Hoyt, a municipal social worker from Edmonton with extensive experience focused on developing the capacity of allies to dialogue about gender-based violence and the role of men and boys as agents of change. He will be speaking on the lessons learned in his career about possibilities, challenges, and benefits of working with men and his struggles engaging boys. Michael has been striving for the normalization of men working shoulder to shoulder with women from a strength-based approach, focusing on men being important, capable, and necessary allies rather than white knights. Michael believes that most everyone, given a chance, believes relationships work better based on love and respect rather than fear. He will be uncovering and reinforcing the communities’ stories about how we work towards love and respect in relationships.

The Government of Alberta awarded Michael the Inspiration Award in 2017 for his work in Family Violence Prevention. In 2015 the Centre to End All Sexual Exploitation (CEASE) awarded Michael a Men of Honour Award for demonstrating compassion and understanding in his support of women in all aspects of society. In his career, he has felt guided by the words of Lila Watson, an aboriginal activist who urges those with power not just to help others but to find ways in which our mutual liberation binds us together.

Violence and abuse are not issues that should stay behind closed doors—they are the responsibility of the whole community. Together we can take action towards creating a world where everyone thrives in safe and empowering relationships.

*Please note, tickets need to be purchased by Thursday, October 21 to guarantee mailed swag packages will arrive in time for the event on November 5th. Everyone who purchases a ticket after that date will still receive a package, it just may not arrive until after the 5th.

website event image 2020.png

Join us for our 3rd annual Breakfast with the Guys - where we bring awareness to the small ways you can actually make a big difference for all the women and girls in your life.

Our 2020 Keynote Speaker and Next Gen Men’s Executive Director, Jake Stika is a passionate speaker and facilitator focused on gender-based issues related to the social and emotional development of young men, the health and well-being of men in communities, and gender equity in workplaces. Jake was named one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40, as well as having earned recognition from Ashoka, the British Council, and the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion.

He has spoken at the United Nations as part of the Canadian Delegation, and participated in the UN Women Safe Cities Initiative Global Forum. He is also a proud advisor to the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association, Canadian Women & Sport, as well as the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter.

When women reach out to us for help, it tends to be after the abuse has taken place. We work hard to support them in their journey to healing and continue to change the lives of many women and children. However, we strongly believe that prevention and education are what will create the cultural shift to ultimately end domestic violence. But we need your help!

Last year’s Breakfast with the Guys event SOLD OUT, so make sure you get your tickets early. It may be a virtual event but we have some fun surprises* and a message to make it worthwhile.

We hope to see you there!

*please note, Swag will only be mailed to the first 250 guests.

2018 Breakfast with the Guys - Foothills

  • Okotoks Plus Best Western Inns & Suites (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Please join us for the 1st annual Breakfast with the Guys* - Foothills!

Enjoy a networking breakfast, followed by a presentation by former Calgary Stampeder, Keon Raymond. Raymond will share his personal story of experiencing family violence and what it means to be a part of the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters Leading Change project.

Then you'll be out the door and on your way back to work by 9am!

When women reach out to us for help, it tends to be after the abuse has taken place. We work hard to support them in their journey to healing and continue to change the lives of many women and children. However, we strongly believe that prevention and education are what will create the cultural shift to ultimately end domestic violence.

Violence and abuse are not issues that should stay behind closed doors - they are the responsibility of the whole community.

So Rowan House is calling on the good guys to be leaders for change.

If you are a leader in the community, Breakfast with the Guys is an opportunity for you to take small steps that will have a big impact. Together we can create a safer future for those who live with violence every day. These are women you know, in your workplace, on your daughter’s soccer team, around you when you are out with friends and those in the causes you support.

*Please note, this event is not limited to men. All are welcome!
